at x=1 y = 1 so (1,1)
at x=2, y=8 so (2,8)
Use gradient formula m = (y2-y1)/(x2-x1) = (8-1)/(2-1) = 7/1 = 7, the gradient of the secant is 7.
Hi Sir!
Find the gradient of the secant to the curve:
y=x^3 through the points whre x=1 and x=2
I don’t really understand this formula (EXEL have used it to answer the question) :
m= f(x)- f (c) divided by (x-c )
The working out for the above question using the formula above is:
2^3 -1^3 divided by 2-1
=7
Thus the gradient of the secant is 7.
Please explain this fomula as I don’t understand how it applies with the working out where x=7.

In term 2 we will be starting Chapter 10 Linear Functions, i.e. y = mx + b etc. In the first lesson we will finish one more exercise on Quadratic functions and go through the term 1 Exam Paper

The exam will test you on chapters 1-4, 8,9 and 15 (ex15.1 – 15.6). The exam will be on monday 6/4/09
Please bring your exercise book on exam day even if I’ve marked your book because I need to check what exercises you did. Also Please bring at least 4 writing paper.
Please study the examples I did with you in class in detail.

I have handed out summary sheets for trigonometry and 2008 Term 1 exam. Please attempt the exam at home. There would be questions that you may not be able to do because we haven’t finished chapter 15. However you should try to do all other questions.
